As I Lay Dying ‘Shadows Are Security’ (2005)

Shadows Are Security was one of those albums I discovered in high school when I was first getting into melodic metalcore. I was a punk rock kid through and through for most of my early teens, but around the time Underoath dropped They’re Only Chasing Safety in 2004 it set me off on a path that eventually led to bands like Killswitch Engage and to a lesser extent As I Lay Dying who blended the brutally heavy guitars of metal and introduced more melodic note choices and clean vocal hooks. That interplay between double bass drums, harmonized guitars, and the screamimg/clean dual vocal approach will always have a place in my heart. And so will Shadows Are Security for that same reason.

Standout Songs: “Confined”, “The Darkest Nights”, “Reflection”
