Sway’s The Millia Pink and Green EP is one of those quietly brilliant records that has never got the recognition it truly deserves. It’s pretty much completely unknown outside of a cadre of hardcore shoegaze fans. You have all the typical shoegaze tropes, layered guitars that shimmer and dissolve, while vocals float like whispers in the fog, half-intelligible and buried in the mix. But there’s also a real patience in the songwriting process in the way the songs unfold, letting the atmosphere speak for itself. Subtle, understated, and immersive. It’s pretty as all hell.
But what’s even more intriguing is that the band pretty much lives in the shadows. They barely exist online, almost no social media presence whatsoever, which has given them this mysterious, cult-like reputation among devoted shoegaze fans. It’s increasingly rare in this hyper connected world of Facebook and Instagram ads to find a band that almost refuses to be found. Makes it even more enjoyable when you stumble along them.
