Beach House ‘Depression Cherry’ (2015)

Depression Cherry is music made for quiet, misty mornings when the world hasn’t quite decided what mood it’s in yet. The album found the duo drifting back to their earlier, simpler dream pop sound, crafting lullabies for millennials who enjoy spending their evenings past the stroke of midnight. The band purposefully scaled back the big glossy pop moments from their prior two albums and instead re-oriented themselves around using electronic drums, developing textures that coalesce around whatever secrets lead singer Victoria Legrand is uttering through her reverb-soaked microphone.

And to be clear, there’s a sort of mythical quality to what Legrand and Alex Scally have created here. Songs that bloom in their own time, layering sound upon sound until everything feels suspended in the atmosphere. Beach House has always been good at that sense of mystery, but Depression Cherry might be their most deliberate reminder that dream pop works best when it gives each moment a little bit of space to breathe.

Standout Songs: “Space Song”, “PPP”, “Wildflower”
