Three Dog Night ‘Harmony’ (1971)

Three Dog Night rose to prominence in the late 1960s and dominated the charts throughout the early ’70s with a string of polished radio-friendly hits. The band’s had a pretty unique identity in that they had a three-lead-singer format which gave their sound a versatility few groups outside of the Eagles could match. At their commercial peak, they scored an impressive 21 Top 40 hits. Their 1971 album Harmony reflected this golden period, delivering staples like “An Old Fashioned Love Song” and “Never Been to Spain,” both of which showcased their knack for interpreting outside songwriters and turning material into enduring classics. Three Dog Night never really pushed musical boundaries or anything, but they certainly flourished in distilling the strongest elements of rock, soul, and gospel into an accessible form that made them a quintessential American pop-rock band of the 1970s.
