Whodini is one of those groups that define 80’s hip hop. They’ve got the slow grooves, heavy synths, and staccato vocal delivery down pat. Their 1984 hit “Friends” is a signature track that lands on pretty much every damn hip hop playlist paying homage to the early days of genre, pairing a haunting synth groove with a candid meditation on loyalty. The song’s hooky chorus and polished sound made it a crossover success and one that has stood the test of time as it became a super popular song to sample by a variety of hip-hop titans (Kendrick Lamar, Bone Thugs, Public Enemy, and Dr. Dre just to name a few).
