In college one of my closest friends Zach and I became utterly obsessed with the movie Once as well as its soundtrack. The movie is an incredible love story that features Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová (who are also members of the band The Swell Season, which yes is kind of confusing). In the movie they play two down on their luck musicians living in Dublin, Ireland who fall in love with each other through music. And while they never act on that love for one another (Hansard’s character eventually moves to London to make it work with his ex while Irglová reunites with her husband) their collective love for music paints a wonderful human story through quiet moments, heartfelt songs, and unspoken emotions. It’s a platonic relationship that has an unspoken beauty that transforms them both without needing to become romantic. At any rate the soundtrack is absolutely brilliant and listening to it over the course of last weekend was a wonderful trip down memory lane. May need to watch this film again sometime soon.
