If you’re a parent of a kid under the age of 8 years old you are well aware of the Australian TV show Bluey. We covered the album a few years back, but the headline is that over a seven-minute episode the show will have you crying, laughing, and reflecting on how beautiful this time of life is as a parent. My two kids absolutely love the show and it’s a constant fixture in my house.
But what might surprise you is that the voice behind Bandit, the affable Aussie dad, also fronts a long-running alternative rock band. Dave McCormack is the lead singer and guitarist for Brisbane-based group Custard and lends his laid-back charm and vocal warmth to the animated series. Much like the show, the band Custard is adept at crafting quirky and sentimental little vignettes that are strange but oddly appealing. McCormack’s signature dry wit and distinct vocal cadence make him a perfect fit for Bluey and a perfect frontman for Custard. Their 1995 album Wisenheimer captures the band’s collage of jangly guitars, crunchy riffs, and sardonic lyrics bouncing frenetically between power-pop hooks and garage-rock grit. Prepare yourself for weird corners full of unexpected turns and off-kilter charm.
