Black Oak Arkansas ‘Black Oak Arkansas’ (1971)

As I mentioned a few weeks back I’ve been reading Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography over the past few weeks during my down time. It’s a great little trip through his early life and career. Every once in awhile he’ll recall a story from one of his early shows, and one that stuck out was a show he did at Kent State University in 1974 when he opened for Black Oak Arkansas. As fans of The Boss will know this was a year before he dropped Born To Run, landed on the cover of TIME Magazine, and basically blew up to the biggest thing in rock and roll in the United States. Apparently the guys in Black Oak Arkansas were kind of dicks before the show according to folks who were there (Springsteen never mentions anything about it other than how thankful he was to share the stage with them). All water under the bridge at this point, but a fun little footnote to Springsteen’s career as he was making his way up the ladder and opening for one of the more popular commercial acts in the early 70’s.

Standout Songs: “Memories At The Window”, “Hot And Nasty”, “Singing The Blues”
