I went and saw Superman this weekend (fun flick) and at the end of the movie during the closing credits was Teddybears’ song “Punkrocker” sung by none other than the legend Iggy Pop. I hadn’t listened to this song for a good 15 years but as soon as it came blasting through the speakers I was filled with an incredible sense of nostalgia. Anyone who has read my musings on music over the past 2.5 years has clearly picked up on my love for punk rock in all its forms, and while this specific track has a much more electronica-oriented sonic approach, the spirit of punk rock is certainly alive in every bar. I mean it’s Iggy Pop singing it. The thing is gonna slap no matter what the backing track sounds like. At any rate, it took me back to my college days and my brief obsession with this album living in the dormitories at Francisco Torres in Santa Barbara. The rest of the album is such a fun little electronica-meets-rock-and-roll burst of energy that’s hard to deny. And the best thing about it is that my two-year old son is super down with each song off this album, especially “Punkrocker”. Watching him dance around on his chair this morning while the song played and cereal flew out of his mouth was a magical sight to behold, especially when that big ol’ grin flew across his face as he saw me laughing as he busted a few sweet dance moves. I’ve now got two amazing memories from this song that are gonna stick with me the rest of my life. Wouldn’t have it any other way.
