Sha Na Na ‘The Golden Age of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ (1973)

I’ve been reading Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography Born to Run over the past week or so (it’s excellent) and in detailing his early career growing up in Freehold, New Jersey The Boss makes a ton of references to the Doo Wop group Sha Na Na and how they influenced his life. Beside being a foundational band for the great Springsteen, Sha Na Na is primarily known for their role as the Johnny Casino and the Gamblers in the album Grease featuring John Travolta. If I’m being totally honest this album was a bit of a slog for me to get through (75 minutes of doo wop rock and roll will do that to ya) but it was an informative listen for the historical context and imagining a bunch of wild-eyed teenagers clad in leather and slicked back hair dancing their legs off listening to this stuff.

Standout Songs: “Pretty Little Angel Eyes”, “His Latest Flame”, “Why Do Fools Fall In Love”
