Spanish Love Songs isn’t for everyone. But they certainly are for me. I love their Americana-tinged pop punk, the raw vocals from lead singer Dylan Slocum, and the honesty in which they approach their songwriting. Every song is a story that comes from a place of honesty. While Slocum’s harsh “yell-sing” vocals may be grating for some and the band’s incessant focus on mental health in nearly every song may be overwhelming, it’s the sort of thing that resonates deeply with me when I’m in the mood for a serious dose of self-introspection. It’s the continuation of the emotional punk tradition bands like Hot Water Music and Wire became beloved for over the years. In the coming (very soon) age of AI music beginning to creep into the mainstream, this is the type of emotional catharsis that will be impossible to replicate. In a weird way, I love Spanish Love Songs for that more than anything. They represent a very human experience which will never go out of style. In 25 years time they will be the type of band that ages very well. And that should be celebrated.
Standout Songs: “Routine Pain”, “Self-Destruction (as a Sensible Career Choice)”, “Generation Loss”, “Beach Front Property”, “Losers”
