I was in downtown Palo Alto last night for a Thai cooking class with my mom at Sur La Table. It was a great time, and as we were exiting the store we realized we were a block away from the Coldplay concert at Stanford Stadium and had to juggle our way through all the traffic that comes along with 50,000 people. As we were waiting for the crowd to thin out a bit we could hear the openers playing and I pretty quickly realized one of them was WILLOW. I was pretty obsessed with her song “symptom of life” when it first came out last year. The whole thing is a massive jazz meets modern pop experience. It has so many dynamics at play it’s almost overwhelming at first. The jazzy piano line at the beginning of the song and the syncopated bass rhythms are simply sublime, and then when you thrown in the 7/4 time signature it makes it all the more interesting. Thom Yorke and Beyonce Knowles eat your heart out.
Standout Songs: “symptom of life”, “false self”, “pain for fun”
