One of my buddies was a huge Senses Fail fan back in high school and while I never really got too deep into their discography, I certainly listened to a ton of Let It Enfold You. Their hit single “Buried A Lie” was everywhere during the emo heyday, a real mainstream success, which in retrospect is honestly hilarious considering the lyrical content of the song. Hidden underneath all the catchy melodies and love-sick undertones is the story of an unhinged man who reads about the death of a random woman in the newspaper, takes it upon himself to dig up her body, and transports it to his living room where he tries to solve the murder cover-up on his own before this body decomposes. Emo had a pretty low standard for romantic connotations in the mid-aughts but even for the genre the subject matter in this one is pretty wild. I’ve been laughing all day thinking about the absurdity of this song and how America just sort of accepted it as a mainstream Top 40 hit.
