Flatt & Scruggs ‘Foggy Mountain Jamboree’ (1957)

Foggy Mountain Jamboree is notable for a couple reasons. It’s a fun as hell romp through traditional bluegrass music, pretty much the definition of the sound you hear in your head when someone says “bluegrass”. But most importantly, it’s also somewhat of a historical document that chronicles a turning point of the role of the banjo player. Before Earl Scruggs the five-string banjo was largely relegated to rhythmic backup, a textural accent in old-time string bands. But Scruggs officially pulled the instrument into the spotlight and gave it a melodic authority that had rarely been heard before. Alongside Lester Flatt’s steady rhythm guitar and honeyed vocals, Scruggs’ cascading arpeggios and three-finger style of playing would forever change the way bluegrass’ now featured instrument would be played evermore.

Standout Songs: “Flint Hill Special”, “Earl’s Breakdown”, “Blue Ridge Cabin Home”
