SKATERS’ Rock and Roll Bye Bye sounds like a scrappier, sunnier cousin to early 2000s New York garage rock, sort of like what The Strokes Is This It would have sounded like if they spent less time in dive bars and more time riding skateboards by the beach. There’s a loose, surfy charm running through this record, which is somewhat ironic considering the band hailed from NYC. All the elements of sunny garage rock are here– jangly guitars, washed-out melodies, and a nonchalant sense of cool. It’s catchy and a little messy in a fun way.
