Foreigner’s magnum opus 4 is the kind of album that doesn’t pick a lane. Instead it swerves across the whole damn highway like someone who’s maybe had a few too many bourbons. It’s packed with arena-sized rockers like “Juke Box Hero” (a personal favorite of mine as a kid) and “Urgent”, all big massive riffs and pounding drums and candy-coated hooks built to shake stadium walls. But what makes 4 a pretty memorable album for me is when Foreigner tunes up the moodiness to 11. Tracks like “Waiting for a Girl Like You” drift into this smoky, late-night haze what with the soft synths and aching vocals alongside a steady straightforward drum beat. It’s that blend of styles– at one moment loud and proud, and in another smooth and soulful—that made 4 such a massive hit back in the day and a record that’s still fun as hell to listen to today.
