Origami Angel burst onto the modern emo scene with a fastball-down-the-pipe energy which blended rapid-fire math rock with hyperactive skate-punk and added in a dose of unshakable optimism. Somewhere City is a nod to a world where childhood comforts like all-day Danny Phantom marathons and Happy Meals serve as legitimate forms of self-care (shoutout to “Doctor Whomst”) while also being pretty damn rock and roll at the same time. As a guitar player I love the intricate tapping runs and Drop-D riffs, and as a fan of a good old skate punk sing-a-long I sure as hell love the anthemic gang vocals stuffed into every nook and cranny. In a genre that thrives on emotional catharsis it’s pretty damn refreshing that Somewhere City stands out for its sheer exuberance, offering a vibrant counterpoint to the brooding intensity often associated with their counterparts.
This is an album made for the spring, a soundtrack for the sun as it shrugs off winter’s dark coat.
