Buster Poindexter ‘Buster Poindexter’ (1987)

The story behind Buster Pointdexter is incredible– David Johansen was the snarling frontman of the seminal proto-punk band New York Dolls during the early days of his career. And while the smoke-filled clubs of New York City had long been home to Johansen, by the mid-’80s he was ready for a transformation. Trading in his punk sneer for a martini and a pompadour, he reinvented himself as Buster Poindexter, a larger-than-life lounge lizard with a knack for old-school rhythm and blues. And while it just started as just a way to have fun with some old swing and jump blues tunes alongside a killer house band, Buster eventually became something much more. He was a full-fledged persona draped in sharp suits and sizzling with irony. With his rich, booming voice and a knowing wink, he turned songs like “Smack Dab In The Middle” into campy, infectious party anthems, proving that punk rock’s prince could just as easily rule the world of retro cool. On a side note my son and daughter have been cranking “Hot Hot Hot” consistently over the past few weekends and having an absolute blast doing it. Even if Johansen eventually called this song “the bane of his existence” due to its pervasive popularity we’re happy as hell that he covered it.

Standout Songs: “Hot Hot Hot”, “Smack Dab In The Middle”, “Bad Boy”, “Heart of Gold”
