Coheed and Cambria blend progressive rock, post-hardcore, and a deep love for sci-fi storytelling. Their albums follow The Amory Wars, a sprawling space opera written by lead singer and frontman Claudio Sanchez. In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 is no exception, packed with soaring melodies, intricate guitar work, and dramatic, theatrical vocals. It’s ambitious, nerdy, and unapologetically grand.
This album helped define a new wave of prog for a younger generation. Songs like the title track and “A Favor House Atlantic” mixed Rush-inspired complexity with pop-punk energy. It was prog rock made for Warped Tour kids like me, bringing epic storytelling to kids raised on breakdowns and anthemic choruses. In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 was one of the first albums I can remember which introduced me into the “new prog” genre. And while I never really fell in love with Coheed, this album was gateway into music that was more rhythmically and musically intricate than anything else I had heard up to that point. I’ll always remember them for that– a band which challenged me sonically and helped me to appreciate complexity in music.
