Aqua ‘Aquarium’ (1997)

Aqua’s “Barbie Girl” has experienced a bit of a renaissance in the past two years ever since the 2023 film featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling took over pop culture for an entire summer, and while I’m about 18 months late to really capitalize on the film’s notoriety to drive some traffic to my humble website, this week is as good as any to take a spin on their debut album Aquarium. It’s a fun little silly Europop disco album that never takes itself too seriously while also being a ton of fun, and also has the distinct honor of being one of my wife’s favorite albums from middle school and (seriously) can sing 95% of the lyrics to every song from memory despite not hearing the album for nearly three decades.

I asked her to describe the album in one sentence and she said, “I mean I don’t know, you can’t ask me that right now without giving me time to think about, but I had it on repeat circa, how old was I when that came out, nine years old, and while all my friends were listening to R&B I had Aquarium on repeat in my silver Sony boombox for what felt like five years old but was probably only about three months.”

Well said babe. Well said.

Standout Songs: “Barbie Girl”, “Doctor Jones”, “Good Morning Sunshine”
