Growing up in the Bay Area I always felt a special connection to the local music scene and the bands that came from it. Dredg was one of those band for me– they formed just down the road from my hometown in Los Gatos, CA and had a pretty big pop into the mainstream when I was in high school. Catch Without Arms was Dredg’s third album and blended reverb-laden guitars, intricate drum patterns, and soaring melodies which defined their unique take on alternative rock. The album echoed the sonic experimentation of Incubus’s Make Yourself in a way that felt familiar (in a great way). I’ll never forget my friend Sourav showing up on my doorstep with this album, looking me in the eyes, and saying to me “You need to listen to this right now” before thrusting it into my hands. I’ve revisited Catch Without Arms a handful of times since that day, but every time I do I’m immediately transported to my junior year of high school and remember how it felt to hear that alternative rock cinematic soundscape hit my eardrums for the first time.
