Maynard James Keenan is one of alternative rock’s most enigmatic and influential figures. The dude the genre over the past three decades with his distinct voice, intellectual lyricism, and multifaceted artistry. As the frontman of three pretty killer rock bands (Tool, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer) he has a chameleon-like ability to shift between various forms– the raw intensity of alternative metal, the melodic explorations of art rock, and the experimental boundary-pushing found in pretty much everything he touches. It’s all a bit cooler because Keenan remains famously reclusive. He’s opted for a quieter life away from the spotlight, tending to his vineyard and winery Caduceus Cellars in the Arizona desert. This duality—rock icon and reclusive winemaker—has only added to his mystique.
Where Keenan really came into his own was on Tool’s 2001 masterpiece Lateralus. It stands as a defining moment in his career and a testament to Keenan’s evolution into the incredible showman he is today. The album saw Tool leave behind much of their alternative metal aggression from their earlier work and instead embrace complex song structures, bizarre time signatures, and the thematic depth of progressive rock that gets better with every listen. Tracks like “Schism” and the title track “Lateralus” showcased Keenan’s ability to weave intricate, introspective narratives as the band blasts behind him. There is an almost meditative exploration of human connection, spirituality, and transcendence in this album. It cemented Tool as one of the most innovative bands of their time and solidified Keenan’s reputation as a true pioneer.
I was lucky to have the opportunity to see them live with my brother at the Power Trip festival in Indio, CA about a year and a half ago. Although it was an incredible experience to see some of my all-time favorites like AC/DC, Metallica, and Guns N’ Roses, I’d be lying if I said Tool didn’t steal the show. Their combination of incredible musicianship combined with the visual artistry they put on the big screen behind them was truly incredible. It was the standout performance of the weekend and one that has given me an even greater appreciation for Keenan and Tool.
