When The Stooges roared onto the scene in 1969 it was like a Molotov cocktail got tossed into the face of the flower-power era. Feral riffs, primal drums, and Iggy Pop’s unhinged stage presence were the recipe for success here, and by putting it together they waged a ferocious rebellion against rock’s growing polished side and laid the groundwork for the punk explosion that would come later in the mid-70’s. Iggy Pop was a true wild card– like we wrote about during our review of Funhouse he was fond of covering himself in peanut butter and blood on-stage, and his unpredictable and uninhibited nature set the bar for punk rock insanity which made him one of the most electrifying and fearless performers in music history. Songs like “I Wanna Be Your Dog” and “No Fun” were grimy, hypnotic anthems of discontent that embodied the raw, dangerous energy the band lived for.
