On The Boys & Girls Chuck Strangers eschews optimism and embraces pessimism in a stark way. With a brooding baritone Strangers embarks on a somewhat cryptic journey, weaving together bits and pieces of anecdotes in a way that makes it clear the aesthetic he’s shooting for is a lo-fi blueprint very similar to Earl Sweatshirt’s 2018 album Some Rap Songs. Strangers’ effort isn’t as compelling as Sweatshirt’s, but the pace of the album ensures each song doesn’t overstay its welcome.
