Smoking Popes ‘Destination Failure’ (1997)

Smoking Popes lead singer Josh Caterer was famously obsessed with big band tunes, and that love affair helped him develop a vocal style that was decidedly unique in the punk rock world. You can hear the influence Caterer had on his contemporaries when you listen to Alkaline Trio bassist Dan Andriano, whose vocal style and songwriting approach on the songs he writes almost sounds like a carbon copy of songs off Destination Failure. It’s the sound of carefree melancholy, the musings of a man who may have thrown in the towel but still enjoys recounting the sordid tale that got him to where he is. It’s a deceptively hooky album, with a pop punk pleasantness that eschews saccharine sweet melodies in favor of something a bit more potent.

Standout Songs: “Let’s Hear It For Love”, No More Smiles”, “I Know You Love Me”, “Megan”
