American hardcore music is kind of having a moment as of late, and Knocked Loose’s third album You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To is a good representation of what it’s all about– thick as all hell, with a mixture of post-hardcore screams from mid-aughts heavyweights like Underoath and the rhythm section of industrial metal iconoclasts like Slipknot which are brutally unrepentant in their desire to make your ears bleed. This thing is heavy and dark and foreboding, which is punctuated by the brilliant decision to have the sound of flies buzzing in stereo sound in between song transitions that starts at the end of “Suffocate”. Hearing that for the first time in my Airpods I legit thought there was a fly buzzing around my head– it was disorienting in all the best ways, a subtle piece of world-building that added to the entire mood of the album.
You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To is unrelenting, with a ferocity that offers no concessions at any point in its 27 minute run time.
Standout Songs: “Piece by Piece”, “Don’t Reach For Me”, “Slaughterhouse 2”, “Sit & Mourn”
