LCD Soundsystem ‘Sound of Silver’ (2007)

LCD Soundsystem’s 2007 album Sound of Silver is a dutiful exploration of dance-punk and electronic music, showcasing lead singer and primary songwriter James Murphy’s penchant for artistry. Building on the success of their eponymous debut album. Murphy’s production combines vintage analog equipment with modern technology, achieving a rich, layered texture that defines the album. His ability to blend house beats with rock sensibilities created tracks that are both danceable and introspective– effectively this is dance-rock for grownups who are here to move their bodies and be moved emotionally all at the same time.

Songs like “North American Scum” and “Someone Great” highlight Murphy’s knack for blending personal reflection with social commentary, “All My Friends” stands out as an anthemic emotional centerpiece, and “New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down” strips all of the high-energy away to provide a canvas for Murphy to bare his soul. The album’s blend of melancholic lyrics and euphoric beats creates a pretty varied listening experience that zigs when you expect it to zag.

Sound of Silver was critically acclaimed for its innovative sound and cohesive production, cementing LCD Soundsystem’s place as a significant force in the alternative and dance music landscapes. As my sister-in-law said about this album, “Imagine David Bowie mixed with Talking Heads and some technoish flair and you have LCD Soundsystem”. Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Standout Songs: “Get Innocuous!”, “North American Scum”, “All My Friends”, “New York, I Love You but You’re Bringing Me Down”
