Roy Ayers is the godfather of neo-soul, setting off on a prolific career in the 1970’s that saw him churn out nearly an album per year. Along with his timeless classic “Everybody Loves the Sunshine” (the title track off this album– more on that in a minute), Ayers is also known for his stature in the hip hop community. His songs have been sampled countless times in major hits over the years, and at one point it was estimated that he was the most sampled artist in the history of the hip hop genre.
Everybody Loves The Sunshine is a quintessential blend of jazz, funk, and soul that epitomized the groove-based music of the 70’s. Released in 1976, this album remains a timeless classic of rhythm and melody, especially the standout title track “Everybody Loves the Sunshine.” At the risk of sounding painfully obvious, the song captures the laid-back essence of summer in a perfect way, a warm and smooth jam that is perfectly paired with a folding chair and cool beverage in your hand. Give me those dense sonic layers and funky basslines all day.
Standout Songs: “Everybody Loves The Sunshine”, “You And Me My Love”, “The Third Eye”
