Chris Isaak ‘Heart Shaped World’ (1989)

Chris Isaak’s blend of moody rockabilly drenched in reverb and magic dust is a haunting blend. Heart Shaped World features a sort of expertise for uncanny world-building that is immediately gripping the moment you first hear it. It sounds like a live concert put on by a 50’s rock and roll band taking place in a dark forest with a deep fog that’s settled just below the tree line. “Wicked Game” is the highlight here (of course) and contains all the traits that makes Isaak such a treat to listen to– slinky guitars that sound obscured by the passage of time, a brooding rhythm section, and the low baritone and soaring falsetto of Isaak that sounds as if it has been carried through the wind for a mile before it reaches your ears.

Standout Songs: “Wicked Game”, “Heart Shaped World”, “Blue Spanish Sky”, “Wrong To Love You”
