Meat Loaf ‘Bat Out of Hell’ (1977)

Bat Out of Hell is the first edition of the musical trilogy that made Meat Loaf a household name over the course of four decades. Bat Out of Hell and its two companion albums (1993’s Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell which features his most famous song “”I’d Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That)” and 2006’s Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose) have sold over 100 million albums combined and features the recipe that Meat Loaf would constantly refer to throughout the course of his career– Broadway meets classic metal meets rock opera, filled with opulent arrangements and gregarious commentaries on life and love and loss. One thing that’s notable is the length of the songs on the album– much like a Broadway musical, Meat Loaf delights in taking listeners on a full-fledged journey in each song, putting together a trio of songs 9 minutes in length and the shortest track coming in at 4:14. Digestible pop songs these are not, and Bat Out of Hell is better off for it.

Standout Songs: “Bat Out of Hell”, “All Revved Up with No Place to Go”, “Paradise By the Dashboard Light”
