The Whispers ‘Love For Love’ (1982)

One of my favorite guilty pleasures is over-produced and opulent R&B from the 80’s that blends smooth jazz with the upbeat funk that took great inspiration from albums like Parliament’s 1975 magnum opus Mothership Connection and went on to inspire one of the greatest contemporary pop funk albums in Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic. The Whispers certainly exist within that venn diagram, featuring undeniably an undeniably rhythm section with a pulse that grooves so goddamn hard that it’s impossible not to bop your head to it. One thing that separates Love For Love from other albums in this space is their vocal harmonization– the band was a vocal group first and foremost, and their five-part vocal harmonies breathe a ton of life into each arrangement that simply delights.

Standout Songs: “Tonight”, “Keep On Lovin’ Me”, “Try It Again”
