The Doobie Brothers ‘The Captain and Me’ (1973)

The Doobie Brothers hold the distinction of being one of the few great rock bands who found success with two very different lead singers that fronted the band at two different phases of their career. From the meat and potatoes boogie rock of Tom Johnson in the early 70’s to the soulful grit of Michael McDonald in the latter part of the same decade, The Doobies became classic rock darlings with their timeless sound and penchant for melodic hooks over all else.

The Captain and Me features Tom Johnson behind the mic and showcases what has made them mainstays over the past 50 years– the jangly jaunt of “Long Train Runnin’”, infectious energy of “China Grove”, and the sentimental softness of “Clear as the Driven Snow”. It’s a perfect representation of the immense range the band already possessed as a country rock band before they flipped the script and incorporated funky blue eyed soul with McDonald later on.

Standout Songs: “China Grove”, “Long Train Runnin’”, “Dark Eyed Cajun Woman”, “Clear as the Driven Snow”
