I happened upon Bilk via X two weeks ago when I saw that their founding drummer was arrested in Jamaica for taking part in a robbery that saw him and his accomplices steal $2 million worth of corned beef. That’s an almost inconceivable amount of corned beef, and the absurdity of the story basically made it a necessity that I listen to his former band mates debut album. Then it turned out the story wasn’t even true at all– the guy who ended up stealing the corned beef was never in the band Bilk, and in fact had zero relation to the band. But I was already pot committed to checking the band out so we trudged along.
Blik is basically what it sounds like when you mash up The Streets with Nirvana and put it in the hands of British lads in their young 20’s– it’s fast, loud, and filled with stories of being a street punk eating chips and watching the tele during the day while getting smashed at the pub at night. Will I listen to this album again? Probably not. But it was worth the 36 minutes just simply based off the twists and turns of a corned beef caper alone.
