Dave Grohl’s love for all things rock and roll comes through in every single project he touches. Whether it be his documentary on Sound City Recording Studios, his numerous contributions to rock through bands like Foo Fighters and Nirvana over the last 30 years, or just a casual interview over a plate of hot wings, Grohl is the living embodiment of the power of rock music to inspire.
On Dream Widow, Grohl writes a love letter to metal music that frankly totally kicks ass. The album is a tie-in with the 2022 comedy horror movie starring Grohl and his Foo Fighters bandmates. The basic plot is while the band is recording a new album at an old mansion, the band gets possessed and gory horror stuff happens a la Final Destination. The fictional band Dream Widow, whose spirits haunt the mansion the Foos are renting, is the soundtrack to the film. And as mentioned previously, the album totally kicks ass– elements of doom metal, death metal, punk, grunge, and 80’s thrash metal are all present here, as well as homages to all of the metal bands that inspired Grohl over the years. Grohl’s passionate delivery and clear love for the subject matter comes through in a very real way, and considering he handled the vast majority of duties on the album (vocals, rhythm guitar, bass and drums) it makes an even larger impact.
