Black Coffee was Peggy Lee’s first album but one that came well after she was already firmly established at the top of the charts. Her 1943 single “Why Don’t You Do Right?” sold over a million copies and kickstarted what would eventually become a seven-decade recording career that earned her the moniker “Queen of American Pop Music” due to her prolific output of 1,100 recorded songs and 270 original compositions as well as her involvement in the classic Disney film Lady & The Tramp where she composed every single song in the movie and lent her voice to four characters (Darling, Peg, Si and Am).
Black Coffee is a traditional American jazz pop record and one that encapsulates the husky but crystal clear voice that made Peggy Lee such a dynamic vocalist throughout her career.
