Redbone ‘Wovoka’ (1973)

Redbone’s absolute smash single “Come and Get Your Love” was notable for a variety of reasons– the incredible groove, orchestral hooks, and iconic chorus that sounds like it was sung from the heavens. It also was the first Native American song to crack the Top Five of the Billboard Top 100 (peaking at #5 in 1973), making it a historically important song in the context of American music history.

With their indigenous backgrounds (each band member had Mexican American and Native American heritage) and a distinct feel for groove, Redbone’s Wovoka is an undeniably soulful album that encapsulates what made mid-70’s soft rock so damn sublime. The tones are warm, the bass lines funky, the guitars jittery, and the drums syncopated. This album has so much damn feel to it in every single second, one of those albums you immediately feel the human presence on it the moment you flip it on.
