Hot Mulligan ‘Why Would I Watch’ (2023)

Hot Mulligan is the natural evolution of the mid 2000’s emo and pop punk movement, a band whose creativity and songwriting can both probably be safely described as being diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder, pinwheeling between chord breaks and rhythmic staccatos at a frenetic pace. As a songwriter myself it’s pretty apparent that what these guys are doing is relatively insane– layers upon layers upon layers that somehow hold themselves together just enough to function as coherent thoughts. When you add in the relatively bleak existential themes that dominate their lyrics, combine that with their laser focus on the challenges of being an adult and the struggle with feelings of inadequate self-worth, and put a cherry on top with the harsh but poppy vocals of lead singer Nathan Sanville, well you’ve got yourself something to cook with. Why Would I Watch covers all the bases of emo, math rock, Midwest emo, and pop punk in a delightfully manic way that always leaves you surprised no matter which door you go through. And, much like their emo forefathers twenty years ago, they clearly have a deep appreciation for sardonic song titles.

Standout Songs: “Shouldn’t Have A Leg Hole But I Do”, “Betty”, “Shhhh! Golf Is On”, “This Song is Called it’s Called What’s it Called”, “No Shoes in the Coffee Shop (Or Socks)”
