A prolific songwriter with writing credits that spanned numerous genres (including The Rolling Stones “It’s All Over Now”) Bobby Womack’s brand of high-powered gospel soul gave him a career that spanned 60 years and eventually culminated in an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. Overcoming a brutally poor childhood (his family often resorted to going to the garbage behind the local supermarket to help get food) and a crippling addiction to cocaine that nearly took his life multiple times through his heyday, Womack is a quintessential soul survivor from the early days. His debut solo album Fly Me to the Moon followed a decade of paying his dues with The Valentinos (which comprised of Bobby and his three brothers) and features some of his best-known songs. And while nothing on this album can touch the incomparable “Across 110th Street” (my favorite Bobby Womack song by a country mile), it’s an excellent representation of the music of a soul mainstay.
Standout Songs: “Baby! You Oughta Think It Over”, “What Is This”, “Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words)”
