DS2 kicked off an epic run for Future that saw him release three platinum albums in a row, solidifying him as the face and voice of Atlanta trip hop that has been a constant on the hip hop charts since its genesis in the mid 2010’s. Say what you will about the aesthetic qualities of “mumble rap” and AutoTune vocals (there’s been enough digital ink debating the merit of the style to fill the Pacific) but the results are indisputable– he’s the 44th most-listened artist on Spotify and has nearly single-handedly ushered in one of the most popular sub-genres of hip hop for going on a decade now. Future is the face of mainstream mumble rap and with references to drug use, casual sex, and material possessions (“I just fucked your bitch in some Gucci flip flops/I just took a piss and saw codeine coming out” sums up DS2 rather eloquently) he seems comfortable doing it.
