For those unfamiliar with musician/comedian Tom McGovern, I feel sorry for you. He’s one of the best things on the internet right now, dropping 80’s ballads that question what the ground steam in New York City is actually comprised of (seriously wtf is happening here) to his recurring segment “Good Band Name, Bad Band Name” where he goes through a list of popular bands and pontificates on the quality of their name. It’s absolutely great and has led me to further grant validity to the conspiracy theory we’re living in a simulation for the sole reason that if AI was running the world and wanted to craft pieces of content that perfectly fit my interests, Tom McGovern’s Instagram account would be the output. He’s my online music spiritual animal.
At any rate, McGovern had a recurring segment during COVID lockdowns called “Two Hour Tuesdays” where he would receive song subject suggestions from fans throughout the week, pick one out of the hat over the end of the week, and give himself two hours to write a song based off that subject. It’s brilliant in so many ways, both from a creative process and fan engagement standpoint, but the thing I love most about this album is how it showcases the breadth of musical knowledge McGovern has. Two Hour Tuesday has songs in genres ranging from folk ballads to hip hop bangers, an eclectic showcase for one of America’s pre-eminent internet music personalities.
Standout Songs: “Honey Badger”, “The LaCroix Boixs”, “Fuck The Night”
