If you went to college at some point in the 2000’s you knew exactly who Daft Punk was. In the late 2000’s mash-ups were absolutely taking off, in large part to the prodigious sampling capabilities that Daft Punk brought to the dance world. Sampling of course had been a major keystone to the genre of hip-hop ever since the 1980’s, but Daft Punk took it to another level, cutting second-long bits and pieces (oftentimes from multiple songs) to create something that is brand-new and yet familiar all at the same time. There’s a great video breakdown of the entire album’s sampling chops from YouTuber Digging The Greats that breaks down some of the insanely complex stuff Daft Punk is doing on Discovery that’s well worth the watch.
When combined with the sheer coolness of being a French House DJ, as well as their aesthetics (who could ever forget their robot masks), you had magic in a bottle that was seemingly curated for a bunch of drunk college kids looking to dance and have a good time on Saturday nights. I’ve probably heard “One More Time” over 250 times in my life and it certainly hasn’t gotten old even if the ol’ knees probably couldn’t hold up to going nuts in the club for five straight hours anymore. Discovery is an all-time classic in the dance music genre and well worth the time to hear one of the best electronic bands of all-time do their thing.
Standout Songs: “One More Time”, “Digital Love”, “Something About Us”
