Pretty Lights flipped the script on EDM in a relatively big way during recording sessions for A Color Map of the Sun. Whereas his prior album releases all were based off digital samples of others original work, he entered the studio in 2013 with the intention to compose an album filled with 100% original material. After those original recordings were captured in the studio he pressed them all as samples on vinyl and then mixed the recordings using software.
The result is an album that sounds like a feeling, emotions that are translated into an auditory experience meant to be felt and not just heard. It’s a great album for driving long road trips, and one that I’ve consistently come back to over the last ten years when I’m looking for an EDM album that I can just zone out to and simply enjoy the pretty lights that flash by along the way.
Standout Songs: “Yellow Bird”, “Color of My Soul”, “Let’s Get Busy”
