Bobby Pickett & The Crypt Kickers ‘The Original Monster Mash’ (1962)

“Monster Mash” is probably the most iconic American Halloween song of all-time and therefore it only made sense for us to spin the album that made it famous on All Hallow’s Eve. This song and album actually came together by happenstance– lead singer Bobby Pickett was an aspiring actor in Los Angeles who moonlit as a lead singer with his band the Cordials. Pickett had a killer Boris Karloff impression (the actor who played Frankenstein’s monster in the 1931 horror film), and after unveiling that impression one night at live show that brought the house down, was encouraged by the band to pursue singing in that style moving forward. The band hit the studio, recorded the hit single, and inspired by the massive success it had on the radio rushed to put together a full album that parodied the contemporary hits of the era.

The rest was history. “Monster Mash” hit #1 on the charts in the US and Canada and has remained a staple for sixty years at Halloween parties everywhere ever since.

Happy Halloween everyone!
