We love a good album opening song as much as anybody, and goddamn does Born Under A Bad Sign ever have one with its title track “Born Under A Bad Sign”. If you’re looking for a perfect example of the sheer power of the blues, a song that rips and grooves and swings with a ferocious swagger, look no further than this track. It’s the best of what the blues have to offer. I couldn’t get enough when I first heard it. Still can’t.

Born Albert Nelson, Albert King holds the distinct honor of being regarded as one of the most influential blues guitarists of all-time. Alongside B.B. King and Freddie King the triumvirate was known as the “Kings of the Blues” despite having no relation to one another. Albert King’s accolades speak for themself– inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1983, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013, and locking down the #22 spot in Rolling Stone’s 250 Greatest Guitarists of All Time list in 2023. King’s distinct playing was as large as his 6’6 250 pound frame, and it was punctuated with his affinity for the Flying V guitar which he regularly brought out during live performances.

If you’re looking for a traditional blues album, Born Under A Bad Sign is a wonderful selection. I’ll be spinning that opening title track for years to come.

Standout Songs: “Born Under A Bad Sign”, “Kansas City”, “Oh, Pretty Woman”
