The Detroit Cobras were part of the wave of Detroit garage rock that exploded in 2001 when The White Stripes released White Blood Cells and brought that glorious back-to-basics fuzz all over the world.
The Detroit Cobras were a similar throwback. Comprised entirely of cover songs from America’s golden age of rock and roll during the late 50’s and early 60’s from artists like The Marvelettes, Charlie Rich, and Irma Thomas, Mink, Rat or Rabbit is a simple and fun garage rock record. The brash swagger of lead vocalist Rachel Nagy and steady sledgehammer of guitarist Mary Ramirez are a constant presence on this album and would be in the twenty years that followed– over a dozen musicians would filter through the band’s ranks following their debut album while Nagy and Ramirez remained their constant. Nagy’s untimely death in 2022 puts their future in jeopardy, but their music (just like the historic songs they covered) will continue to live on.
Standout Songs: “Bad Girl”, “Midnite Blues”, “Cha-Cha Twist”
