The War and Treaty is a a wife-husband duo comprised of Tanya Trotter and Michael Trotter Jr. Their debut album Healing Tide is a wonderful throwback to traditional country music with elements of Memphis soul and blues music blended into their sound.
The vocal performance of Tanya and Michael is the true highlight of this album– reminiscent of the ballads of Tina/Ike Turner and Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, the Trotters unleash a passionate tour de force that stops you in your tracks at certain moments (“Hearts” in particular is a quintessential marriage song, a perfect picture of intimacy). When Tanya unleashes her gritty roar at the top end of her vocal range it’s reminiscent of the great Aretha Franklin, powerful and filled to the brim with intensity (see “Are You Ready To Love Me?”). Michael’s proclivity to shout like a carnival barker during uptempo songs is similarly chilling (“Jeep Cherokee Laredo” being a fine example), and rounds out a wonderful yin and yang dynamic the two possess.
Standout Songs: “Hearts”, “Jeep Cherokee Laredo”, “Are You Ready To Love Me?”, “Little New Bern”
