Måneskin makes me feel old and out of touch. Even more than I usually feel.
The best way I can describe them is an Italian glam rock version of Royal Blood whose sole goal is to make songs that sound as massive and as danceable as possible. And since all the band members are in their early 20’s, their lyrics and pop rock hooks and production style is 100% catered to the club scene and the sheer joy of youth. If I was in my senior year of college I’d be bopping to these guys every single weekend. But I’m now in my mid-thirties. So it sounds like a high schooler who lives down the street threw a party after his parents went out of town and I’m liable to call the cops on them since I have to get up at 7am to get the minivan ready and make sure the iPads are fully charged before we take a road trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium and have a nice picnic in the park afterwards.
And I’m okay with that. They’re the 280th most-streamed band on Spotify, won the Eurovision Song Contest in Italy during 2021, and most importantly is a band who is introducing an entirely new generation of young kids to the sonic glory of rock and roll. If you can get the incomparable Tom Morello to do a featured spot on your album (“GOSSIP”) you’re doing something right. Sharing that love of rock and roll is the most important thing of all.
So rock on Måneskin. Even if I’m calling in a noise complaint if I hear you playing past 10:04pm on a school night.
