Nick Drake ‘Pink Moon’ (1972)

The voice of reclusive youth, Nick Drake’s music was woefully unappreciated during his short life. When he died at the age of 25 due to an overdose on antidepressants, Drake was a relatively unknown musician– just north of 50 people attended his funeral, a relatively close-knit affair. It was only after nearly a decade had passed after his death that his music began to gain in popularity, eventually becoming featured in quirky indie films like The Royal Tenenbaums and Garden State along with being cited as an influence by doomed romantics everywhere— modern artists like Jose Gonzalez and Iron & Wine all cite Drake as an influence on their work (one listen to Pink Moon and you’ll immediately hear the similarities), and that lineage can trace back to The Cure’s Robert Smith who actually named the band after a line in Drake’s song “Time Has Told Me” off 1969’s Five Leaves Left which includes the line “a troubled cure for a troubled mind”.

Pink Moon was Drake’s final full length release before his death. It’s quiet solitude and chronic shyness is pronounced— the album features nothing other than Drake’s voice and his acoustic guitar (the lone exception being a piano line in the title track) and was recorded in a mere two nights at Sound Techniques Studio in London with only Drake and his producer John Wood present during the sessions that began at 11pm.

Standout Songs: “Pink Moon”, “From The Morning”, “Place To Be”
