Fievel Is Glaque’s 2021 album God’s Trashmen Sent to Right the Mess is a collection of live mono cassette recordings that were cut in Brussels during the COVID-19 pandemic that rocked the world in 2020. The ensemble includes American keyboardist Zach Philips and French singer Ma Clément as well as a collection of nearly 30 musicians who joined them during the recording process. This LP was actually first released on Bandcamp as a compilation album from those sessions in Brussels where Philips moved during the pandemic. It’s a free-form lo-fi experience, taking elements of jazz, lounge, pop, and fusion to create a collection of tiny vignettes. It sounds like it was recorded in a tiny apartment filled with friends coming together to create a live music experience and someone happened to have a tape recorder that they turned on during the middle of the sessions.
Considering the avant-garde nature of the album as well as the sheer number of musicians involved in the project it’s hard not to draw parallels between Fievel Is Glaque and Canadian indie supergroup Broken Social Scene. And that’s a good thing if you’re looking for the audio equivalent of a kaleidoscope that celebrates the human experience.
