Dan + Shay is the pinnacle of modern country pop. Lush vocal arrangements transposed over expertly manicured production, with nary a note out of place. It’s effective as hell at being excellent background music that’s easy to listen to and just frankly beautiful in the most inoffensive way. It’s perfect coffee house ambiance music.
“Tequila” in particular has a hook that is so damn catchy it’s nearly impossible to get out of your head after you hear it. The vocal melody and lyricism fills you with a sense of longing that feels unshakable especially when they hit the line “Sky high in Colorado”– you feel like you’re right there in that moment with the narrator, reliving the pain of lost love.
